thanks again to little birdie secrets for a great tutorial on how to make a denim picnic blanket. here's mine...
the top are denim jeans, then you add snaps....

to a vinyl tablecloth underneath so the wet grass doesn't come through onto the blanket.

and when the blanket gets dirty, just unsnap and wash the top only. and the jean pockets that are on the blanket can be used to store eating utensils or rocks to keep the blanket from flying away.
