skull harbor

one of those websites that runs a 24 hour special on discounted things had a special offer to a place in the east hills mall called skull harbor. so i had to take advantage of that for nathan! he went through a big pirate phase this past summer.

here are his little buddies that joined  us...
they had a little introduction...
the decor is awesome! the walls looks like a cave.
they had the boys dress up like pirates.
they marched around.
they had a sword fight.
they beat up the captain.
group shot...
part of the deal included cake and "grogg."
they knew it wasn't his birthday, but the captain wanted him to blow out a candle anyway. he actually lit it for each kid and had them blow it out.

Halloween 2011

nathan had 2 costumes this year. the one on the left is a minion from the movie, "despicable me." i crocheted the hat. that's the costume he wore to school and to trick or treat in. the one on the right is a bum and he wore that one to the church's trunk or treat.

here's nathan and his 4 teachers at the richardson center. it has been the greatest thing having him go there! he has grown up so much!
nathan enjoyed trick-or-treating last year. but this year, he LOVED it!
we went with our friends the handy's...
(sorry sammy for blinding you!)
after every house, he stopped to check out what they gave him. lol.
one of the houses we hit obviously belonged to a bakersfield police officer. so we had this idea for a photo and the boys had no clue what we were having them do! they were so confused and we couldn't stop laughing.
we walked for almost 2 hours. towards the end, adam and nathan took a break every chance they got!
(trick or treat bucket on his head)

doesn't it always happen that you get back into blogging and your life falls apart again?

so while things smooth themselves out, here's a quick snapshot...

haircut day!

nathan is such a hat kid! so it doens't surprise me that he thinks this firemans hat has a bill like a baseball cap! lol.

since everyone who reads this knows what i've been up to since my last post (in early june, yikes!), i'm just going to start fresh from today :) i can't promise my blog to be exciting. to me, it's more of a journal of all the randomness that is my life. it makes me feel like i actually accomplished something when i look through my archives from years ago.

jaren likes homemade rolls and usually uses his moms recipe to make them as often as he can. but it's kind of time consuming for a weekday dinner. *insert my quick fix* winco has these rolls in their freezer section. (i know, weird thing to blog about! but 30 years from now, my grandkids will laugh at all the weird stuff i blog about.)

just spray a pan with pam and place the frozen dough balls in...
spray some wax paper with pam as well and cover...
let them rise 4-5 hours. we usually go to 6 because we like them huge!
then bake them and when they're brown, brush them with some butter. they're plump and taste homemade :)

this next recipe i got from my friend wendy's mom cheryl. hope she doesn't mind me sharing. i will never go back to boxed au gratin potatoes again thanks to her!

ingredients:
5 lbs. potatoes
2 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 cup milk
1/2 stick butter
2 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4  tsp. pepper
3/4 cup parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
2 1/2 cups grated cheese
heat oven to 350*. scrub the potatoes, don't peel. cut into 1/8 inch slices.
in a saucepan, heat the cream, milk, butter, salt, pepper, garlic and parmesan just until warm and blended. don't boil.
butter the bottom of a pan.
then layer potatoes...
cream mixture...
grated cheese....
repeat layers ending with grated cheese on top. bake for an hour and a half at 350* uncovered.
seriously... nuff said!
