re-purposing little boy shirts

nathan has these long sleeve shirts that i got only 6 months ago. i knew they wouldn't last (size wise) until next winter. so i decided to turn them into short sleeves so i can still get some use out of them this summer.

this is very hi-tech, so pay attention ;) i matched up at the armpit seam a short sleeve shirt he already had and added a little bit for the hem and cut off the rest.
reminder to cut off the buttons from the selvage piece and save for another project :)
i ironed 1/4 inch seam onto the short sleeve portion of the shirt, then folded it again another 1/4 inch and sewed.
all done!

Smart! I take all of the uniform pants my kids rip the knees out of (or walk the cuffs off of, in an attempt to "sag", LOL) each fall and cut the legs off and make shorts for the following spring/summer (if they happen to outgrow the waist, I can always pass them down to the next kid).

So many times, the uniform shorts are shorter than my kids are comfy wearing, so I make these nice and long (mid-thigh or even close to knee length - I just cut right above where the knees are torn out) and hem.

It's both money-saving and gives them shorts they don't feel 'exposed' wearing. :)

Great idea! I happily accept hand-me downs from friends and family and they don't always fit at the right time of year. I need to do this more often. Thanks for sharing!
